Dr. Kumar grew up in New York State and New Delhi, India. He graduated from Harvard College magna cum laude with a degree in Mind, Brain, and Behavioral Psychology. After college, he worked as a researcher at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where he studied how aging and dementia affect brain structures and memory systems. His work later brought him to the State University of New York’s Downstate Health Sciences University, where he attended medical school, earned a PhD in Neural & Behavioral Science, and completed residency in Adult Psychiatry. His doctoral dissertation, which explored the relationship between sex hormones and pain, received the Robert F. Furchgott Award for Excellence in Research. Most recently, Dr. Kumar completed a fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior.
Dr. Kumar has experience treating a wide variety of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, PTSD, memory loss, and dementia. He has also trained in advanced techniques such as electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and esketamine. He promotes a broad approach to mental health care, integrating gold standards of clinical practice together with rigorous scientific principles, psychological and philosophical theories, and concepts from Eastern medicine. His therapeutic approach emphasizes “treating the person” rather than the symptoms, with an attention to holistic care. In his leisure time, Dr. Kumar enjoys meditating, playing music, and exploring Los Angeles.
