Dr. Boma Afonya is of West African origin and was raised in the Midwest. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine where she discovered her passion for mental health and decided to pursue psychiatry. She credits her passion for working with underserved and marginalized communities to the formative experiences she had while training in Cincinnati.
As a lover of adventure, she chose to pursue her residency training at the renowned Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Her training was robust and comprehensive, encompassing a diverse patient population with a wide variety of life experiences.
Her clinical expertise includes treating a wide range of mental illnesses including mood and anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders and OCD. She is especially interested in working with professionals, adults navigating stage of life transitions, immigrants, persons of color and sexual minorities.She provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, CBT and supportive therapy. She is also a certified Sports Psychiatrist with additional training to address the unique needs of athletes.
Her approach to psychiatric care is holistic and person-centered, she prides herself on providing compassionate, culturally aware care, with an openness to learn from those she cares for.
Outside of clinical work, Dr. Afonya is involved in mentoring college students with an interest in healthcare and community outreach. She enjoys watching crime TV shows, spending time with family and friends, traveling and continues on her quest to find the best mango sticky rice.
